During a visit by Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque to Madrid last week, Spain’s Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos announced that Sr Zapatero will visit the island next year. If so, it would be the first official by a Spanish head of government since former Socialist Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez visited the island in 1986. Former PM Jose Maria Aznar was in Habana in 1999, but only to attend an Ibero-American summit. Very shortly after the announcement, Sr Zapatero himself said nothing was definite yet after several members of his own party said he should not visit Cuba until its human rights record improves.
