Development minister Magdalena Alvarez announced last Thursday that a new stretch of track to bypass Madrid will cut the AVE journey time between Malaga and Barcelona by 50 minutes, to five hours 40 minutes. The AVE trains currently pass through Madrid’s Atocha station and often have to wait several minutes before they can pull in at a platform. They also have to slow down as they approach the station, losing precious minutes. All of this will be eliminated by the new bypass which the minister said should be completed by the end of this year or the beginning of 2009. The estimated cost of the bypass is €91.2 million.
