It was the most expensive ride the Spanish couple holidaying in Norway had ever had. They were touring the fjords and had to join their cruise ship at Olden on the country’s west coast. They’d left the ship at Stavanger because of illness. However, they mispronounced the name and the taxi driver took them to Halden, hundreds of kilometres away to the east. Unaware of the mistake, the couple paid the 15,000 kroner taxi fare (€1,875) and added a generous 1,000 kroner tip. They discovered their mistake the next day when they couldn’t find their ship. They jumped into another taxi, paying another 15,300 kroner, but no tip this time. In all, they paid nearly €4,000 for their mistake – the price of a 10-day cruise in the fjords in a luxury suite for two.
