Between December 2nd last year, when a law was introduced to convert a number of traffic violations into crimes, and the end of June this year, nearly 30,000 people have received prison sentences for drink-driving, speeding or driving without a licence. Most of them were first-time offenders and had their sentences, ranging from three to six months, suspended. However, a Traffic Authority spokesman said the majority had been shocked by the experience and had not been caught again.
