It may not have anything to do with the economic situation but in Spain there are eight times more bars and restaurants than bank offices – 350,000 to 45,000 to be precise. This could mean Spaniards are drinking and eating too much and not saving enough. The figures were published in La Caixa’s 2008 Economic Report. Needless to say, Andalucia – where the tapa was invented – has the highest number of bar/restaurants, along with Madrid and Catalonia. The Spanish also have more cars than fixed telephone lines which could mean they love fast driving more than fast talking.
