The Secretary of State for Immigration, Consuelo Rumi, predicted last week that the current economic situation would deter many illegal immigrants from trying to enter Spain. But most of the non-governmental organisations involved in helping illegal immigrants have pointed out that people come here for more than just economic reasons and predicted they would continue to trickle in. On the other hand, the European Agency for Frontier Cooperation (Frontex) said an in creasing number of illegal immigrants were opting to get into Europe via Italy and Malta. A spokesman for the Federation of Associations of Rumanian Immigrants said his people were no longer coming to Spain, now that conditions and wages were improving back home.
