The Barcelona football team refused to travel on Air Berlin last week – because the airline has refused to use the Catalan language on routes that begin or end in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. The footballers were ordered not to board an Air Berlin flight from Pisa to the United States last week, where they had been invited to play some friendly matches. As result the US Soccer League lost €150,000 in cancelled tickets as well as the same amount for tickets on another airline. The president of the Barcelona football club, Joan Laporta, is a strong supporter of independence for Catalonia and has made Catalan the team’s official language.
