One of the Socialist government’s favourite boasts is that it allocates much more money to social spending than the Partido Popular ever did when it was in power. So several PP researchers got to work and came up with some interesting figures which show that in the 1997, when then Prime Minister José María Aznar introduced his austerity budget, the government’s social spending amounted to 54.3% of the budget. This year, the government’s so-called expansive budget, that ism, the amount allocated to social spending, only amount to 50.5% percent of the total.
