FEMALE CIRCUMCISION VICTIMS OPERATED ON

Surgeons at the Instituto Dexeus in Barcelona have successfully reconstructed the clitorises of two African women who had suffered ablation in the countries of birth. The women reported a return of sensitivity in their genital area two months after the operation, but neither have attempted to have sexual relations yet. Another ten women have applied for the operation which requires a psychological evaluation of the patient before the doctors agree to go ahead. The operation lasts one-and-a-half hours and the post-operative period is relatively short. A spokesman for the clinic said the operation would only be carried out on African women resident in Spain: “It would make no sense to operate on a woman who would be repudiated by society when she returns home.”
