Since the Law against Domestic Violence came into force three years ago, 1.2 million women, or just over six percent of the female population aged 18 and over, have reported being attacked by their partners. Women aged 30 to 49 reported the most incidents. The figure for women killed by their current or former partners continues to hover around the 70-mark, with a record 72 dying in 2004. But the figure for last year was hardly any better – 71 – and from the number of deaths so far this year, it looks as if a similar number will apply. In all, 531 women have died as a result of domestic violence since the year 2000.
