The first thing that Socialist councillor David Valadez said after he was elected as the new Mayor of Estepona last Thursday was that he intended to take a cut in salary as part of the austerity policy he plans to introduce. He replaces Antonio Barrientos who had dismissed Sr Valadez during the previous legislature, after he openly criticised the former mayor’s real estate policies. Sr Barrientos is currently on jail charged with rela estate-related corruption, among other things. Sr Valadez, 31, was re-elected on the Socialist slate in last year’s local elections. He is a qualified journalist, and has been working as the councillor for Social Welfare up to now. He told the press that his first task was to clean up local politics in order to win back the credibility of the citizens.
