The latest specimens on show in the General History Library at the University of Salamanca are two 19th century condoms which were found in a medical book printed in the 16th century. The condoms, made of pig gut with a blue ribbon round the top to keep it on the male organ, were wrapped in a page from a newspaper printed in 1857. They were found when staff were drawing up a new catalogue and later investigations indicate that they were manufactured in 1857 or just before and had been left by student who was consulting the medical book.
