SOTHEBYS SELLS STOLEN ART WORK

Despite a last minute attempt from the Spain’s Ministry of Culture to stop the sale, Sotheby’s in London auctioned the triptych now known to be stolen from a church in Nájera, La Rioja, in 1913. A Sotheby’s spokesman said the auction house had no intention of removing the item from sale as it had already been sold on several occasions. The work, La Lamentación, by Ambrosius Benson, had an estimated sale price of €750,000, but finally went for €1.46 million to an unknown buyer.
