Strike action by the Policia Nacional caused havoc once again at the Gibraltar frontier causing traffic delays of over two hours in sweltering summer temperatures last week. People planning to visit the Rock this month are advised that the strike action will continue on the following selected dates: July16th-17th, 23rd-24th and 30th-31st. According to reports in the El País national daily, the Spanish police strike action is also causing delays and queues in the port of Algeciras, affecting the annual Styrait crossing by Moroccan immigrants, and Malaga airport. The paper also reported that during the work to rule period, arrests have dropped by 60% in Andalusia. Although the police continue to obey orders from superiors and attend to emergency and humanitarian requests from the public, routine crime prevention and deterrent initiatives have been drastically reduced, with the result that in Estepona alone “denuncias” of thefts and robberies by members of the public have increased by 70%. The Policia Nacional earn an average 6,000 euros less than regional and local police forces in Spain, and are seeking negotiations with the Ministerio del Interior “to end the discrimination and achieve equality of pay” with their colleagues.
