As the special traffic operation known as “Operación Salida” got under way last Friday, the Traffic Authority estimated that more than 4.3 million journeys would be made on Spain’s roads over the weekend at the start of the summer break. Money is tight and most Spaniards are heading for their favourite beach rather than catching a plane to exotic parts. Long hold-ups were expected on the exit roads of all the major cities with the longest being forecast in Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia, Murcia and Andalucía. While the first and last weekends of July and August see the heaviest traffic, Operacion Salida springs into action every weekend until the summer break is over.
