A spokesman for Madrid’s Collective for Gays, Lesbians, Transsexuals and Bisexuals (Cogam) said last week that homophobic attacks have risen in the last three years. Miguel Angel Gonzalez said there were two reports of attacks on gays in 2004, a figure which rose to 54 last year. He said: “Beating a maricón (queer) is cheap, 600 euros if the judge is sensitive. If not, the aggressor gets away with it.” Cogam is no urging the government to pass a law to make homophobia a crime.
