MPs approved a proposal last week that will lead to a ban on conventional light bulbs by 2011. They will be replaced by low consumption bulbs, except in exceptional circumstances, such as medical situations. It is estimated that light bulbs currently consume 3% of the total energy produced in the country. The proposal, which was put forward by the Environment Commission and the Catalan nationalist party CiU, was approved by all the parliamentary groups. There are about 350 million old fashioned light bulbs and their replacement will save 6.5 tons of CO2 each year, according to the experts.
