The Catholic Church, which owns the COPE radio channel, has distanced itself from the comments of the station’s morning presenter, Federico Jiménez Losantos, since he was found guilty early last week of slandering Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón. In a statement, the Bishops Episcopal Conference said the station boss, Alfonso Coronel de Palma was responsible for its “stars”. Jiménez Losantos had accused the mayor of using the victims of the Madrid bombings in March 2004 during his climb to power but had forgotten them after he was elected. Several Bishops have publicly criticised the radio presenter’s and the insults he frequently makes on his programme.
