A Spanish surgeon has successfully transplanted the forearms of a Colombian woman who was the victim of a guerrilla bomb attack at the university where she was a student 30 years ago. Dr Pedro Cavadas carried out the operation in November 2006 and Alba Lucia recently showed off her new hands and forearm to the press. She said she knew there was no guarantee of success when she went into the operating theatre but she is glad she took the risk because she can now “sew on a button” and do all the other simple things that everyone else takes for granted. It is the first successful operation of its kind.
