4000 PEOPLE EVACUATED IN GAS ESCAPE

Some 4,000 people were evacuated from their homes and five hotels in Benidorm last Friday when propane gas began escaping from a tanker lorry. The tanker, with 20,000 litres of propane on board, had been damaged when it hit the underside of a bridge. Police cordoned off a security area of 500 metres but the incident ended three hours later after firemen succeeded in replacing the valve on the tanker which had been broken under the bridge.
