The National Court ordered a plaque and stone monument in memory of an ETA terrorist to be removed from a park in Hernani in the Basque Country. José Artimuño, aka Pana, was killed in a shoot-out with police in 1981. He was wanted for the murder of the Alava police chief the year before. Judge Fernando Grande-Marlaska adopted the measure at the request of the anti-ETA group Dignity and Justice, as part of the penal procedure against Hernani mayor Marian Beitialarerangoitia who has been accused of praising terrorism by allowing the plaque and monument to be erected, and faces one to two years in jail if found guilty. Dignity and Justice hailed the ruling as a first step towards removing the names of dead ETA terrorists from a large number of streets in towns throughout the Basque Country.
