The Justice Ministry managed to thwart 129 marriages of convenience between Spaniards and illegal foreigners in the first three months of this year. More than 4,200 mixed marriages took place last year, and another 449 were avoided. The head of Madrid Police’s foreigners bureau, Jaime Nicolás, told reporters: Some marry for money, dome for love, and some to get papers.” He said marriages of convenience are “very effective, difficult to investigate, and difficult to charge anyone with.” However, once the fraudulent marriage has been detected and proven, it can be punished either by annulment, or treated as a penal case of usurping a person’s civil state.
