Commenting on the internal strife in the main opposition party, the Partido Popular, Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero compared the situation to a “hieroglyphic that can’t be cracked”. He told a rally of his supporters in Badajoz, Extremadura, last week: “There are those (PP members) who want the same politics under a different leader, and those who want new politics under the same leader.” He was speaking at a time when most of the PP’s big guns were using opposition leader Mariano Rajoy for target practice, Since then they have become aware of the damage they are doing to the party and are now holding their fire until the party congress later this month.
