The president of the regional government of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, said last Friday that she is “scandalised” by work absentee rates in the capital among civil servants, currently running at 22%. Figures show that it is the younger employees who fail to turn up for work, generally on Monday morning. Sra Aguirre said that she has decided to tackle the problem and will seek an agreement between politicians, unions and employers aimed at reducing absenteeism in the public sector.
