Police arrested a 32-year-old man last week after he tried to sell a communion cup to three different priests in Estepona, saying it belonged to his family. Each priest discovered something had gone missing from their churches after the man’s visit. One of the articles was an organ and another was the communion cup. Unknown to the thief, it was inscribed with the name of the priest at the church he’d stolen it from. It had been given to him as a present by several of his colleagues when he celebrated his 50th anniversary as a priest. One of the other priests noticed the name when he refused to buy the cup. He rang the other priest who tipped off the police. All the priests in Estepona got their stolen objects back, although the police are now investigating religious thefts in other towns.
