Driving schools have reported an “avalanche” of young people rushing to get their motorcyclist’s licence now before a tougher exam comes into force on September 1st this year. On that date, the minimum age for driving a bike will go up from 14 to 15, and the driving test will include a practical exam in real traffic, which it does not do at present. Bikers will not be able to carry a passenger until they are 18, up from 16 now. The driving schools also report an increase in applications for driving licences from people who have been driving their cars for years without a licence. This has now been reclassified as a criminal act so instead of a hefty fine, anyone caught without a licence now faces a jail sentence.
