The ecologist group, Ecologistas en Acción, reported last Wednesday that the US nuclear submarine “Florida” docked that morning in the port of Gibraltar. The Spanish Foreign Ministry confirmed that the US government had informed it that the sub was carrying out a routine stop-over. A ministry spokesman said it had requested that the visit be made “with the highest public safety and environmental guarantees”. The sub is carrying MK-48 torpedoes and 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles. After the Tireless case, the Spanish government asked the Gibraltar not to allow nuclear submarines to put in at the Rock. However there is no international legislation to back up the request and local ecologists have said the number of nuclear subs staying over at Gibraltar is increasing, mentioning the cases of HMS Turbulent and HMS Sceptre.
