It was one of the more spectacular events held last week to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the popular uprising against the French in Madrid on May 2nd, 1808. Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz Gabaldon turned up at the Prado Museum last Friday wearing a 19th cloak to receive six paintings from Goya, played by actor Cales Canut. He handed over full-size reproductions of the Dos de Mayo, La Maja Desnuda (The Nude Maja) and the clothed version, La Familia de Carlos IV (The Family of Charles IV) and La Reina Maria a Caballo (Queen Maria on Horseback). Considered to be Goya’s most representative works of the War of independence period, they were each taken to a spot in the city where the worst fighting took place to form ñpart of the exhibition 6 Goya 6. The works were returned to the museum late the following day.
