Firefighters in Malaga province now have a valuable new tool to help them stop blazes in rural areas – screens made of a material that can resist temperatures of up to 1,500 º C. Their effectiveness was demonstrated last week in the Montes de Malaga. The screens were erected round an area of scrub measuring 1,600 square metres which was then set alight. Despite the wind and the high noon temperature, which help fires to spread, the 10-metre-high flames were not able to get past the screens. So far this year, firefighters have had to deal with 19 small fires. A spokesman for the provincial government’s environment department warned that the risk of fire would be high again this summer. Because of the rains so late in the season, vegetation has grown even higher, thus providing more fuel when it dries out later on in the summer.
