400 PEOPLE FLEE FOREST FIRES

The first forest fires to hit the Canary Islands this year started on the outskirts of Hermigua in the La Gomera district of Tenerife last Friday. Two small fires forced some 400 people to leave their homes and take refuge on a nearby beach. Most of them spent the night in local inns and hotels until the authorities got the blazes under control and gave them the all-clear to return to their homes.
