In its annual report published last week, SOS Racismo said that nearly half a million illegal immigrants are currently under threat of deportation and urged the government to annul the Foreigners Law, which it described as discriminatory. The organization’s spokesman Edoardo Bazzaco told a press conference that the Socialist government has deported 370,000 illegal immigrants in the last four years, 43% more than José María Aznar’s second four-year term. He also accused the politicians of creating a racist atmosphere for election purposes. He said 1,861 people had died last year while making the dangerous sea crossing from West Africa to the Canary Islands.
