A 34-year-old Army officer shot his former wife and her boyfriend last Friday morning in Alovera, Guadalajara province, before ringing the police to inform them where they could find two bodies, warning them there would also be a third. He then turned the gun on himself. Sgt Javier Lacasa Cebolledo turned up at his former wife’s house at 7.30 am and shot her boyfriend, a 38-year-old prison guard identified as Andrés M.J., when he opened the door. He entered the kitchen and shot 34-year-old Sylvina Jannette Bassari. The shootings were witnessed by the couple’s four-year-old son, who is now in care and being attended to by psychologists in the Guadalajara University Hospital. The authorities are now waiting for his mother’s family to arrive from Argentina to take charge of him. Sra Bassari had denounced Lacasa for domestic violence in both 2003 and 2006 and obtained a restraining order against him. His superiors had relieved him of his weapons but he had managed to buy another gun, the police said.
