Republican presidential candidate John McCain told reporters last week that if he is elected, he will improve relations between the US and Spain. He said it was time to let bygones be bygones and forget that Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero not only pulled the Spanish peace-keeping force out of Iraq as he had promised during the 2004 election campaign, but also advised other countries to do the same. He was speaking the same day that Sr Zapatero was photographed sitting at a table alone at the Nato meeting in Bucharest while several other heads of government chatted with President George W Bush in the background. Mr Bush never congratulated Sr Zapatero after he won the 2004 election and last week he merely said “Hola, hola, felicidades (congratulations)” when they passed each other on entering a meeting.
