The Bishop of Ciudad Real, Antonio Algora, has forced the Virgen de la Encarnación brotherhood in the village of Abenójar in La Mancha to expel its 54-year-old vice-president for her “manifestly scandalous conduct” as a lesbian. Identified only as María A.R., the woman recently married her partner with whom she has been living for more than 15 years. The expulsion came on the eve of the town’s annual romería and many of its 1,600 inhabitants turned out in T-shirts that ex`press support for the couple. The Brotherhood’s president, Benita Ray, immediately resigned after the expulsion. During the general election campaign, the bishop compared the Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to Caligula for allowing gay marriages.
