The judge investigating the Malaya case in Marbella, Oscar Pérez, ruled last Friday that the alleged brain behind the town’s urban corruption, Juan Antonio Roca, may leave prison if he can come up with bail of one million euros. Most of Roca’s fortune, estimated at 200 million euros, has been embargoed by the authorities but Judge Perez said it would be reasonable to believe that Roca has money stashed away in tax havens. But his lawyers said he would have to borrow the bail money from family and friends. The authorities will hang on to Roca’s passport and he will have to keep a 500-metre distance from all airports.
