Brisa, the first female lynx to be born in captivity in the El Acebuche centre in the Doñanan Nature Park in 2005, gave birth prematurely to two kittens last week. One of them was born dead and after spending about an hour trying to revive it, the mother ate it. Brisa ignored the second kitten, which was born eight hours later. It developed respiratory problems and hypothermia so the centre’s staff removed it to the intensive care unit, where it remains in a critical condition. Another eight lynxes have mated this season in the recovery programme being carried out at three centres in Jaén, the Jerez Zoo, and the El Acebuche centre.
