Despite their election defeat, the Partido Popular’s executive council fully supported Mariano Rajoy’s decision to carry on as leader. Sr Rajoy has promised to present a new team to the party’s congress in June, and one of the first familiar faces to go is that of the party’s parliamentary spokesman, Eduardo Zaplana. When he announced his decision last week, Sr Zaplana, said it was the best one for the party which needed to renovate and see “new faces”. He said he would stay on as a backbench M.P. Meanwhile Javier Arenas, a form minister who now leads the party in Andalucía, could be in line to replace Ángel Acebes if he is moved from the post of party General Secretary.
