Junta de Andalucia president Manuel Chaves was re-elected on Sunday, March 9th, but his Socialist Party (PSOE) lost five seats, down to 56 from 61 in 2004. The main opposition party, the Partido Popular, gained ten seats, up to 47 from 37. The Izquierda Unida maintained its six seats but the Partido Andalucista was wiped off the political map. The PP did very well in the big towns along the coast but the inland towns, with a few surprise exceptions such as Coín, stayed faithful to the PSOE.
