Politics were set aside last Thursday when Andalucia Day was celebrated throughout the region. During his speech at the official ceremony held in the Maestranza Theatre in Sevilla, Junta de Andalucia President Manuel Chaves said Andalucia was better prepared than ever to meet all future challenges. He said the new Autonomy Statute gave the region a greater capacity for self-government, more development possibilities and more rights for its citizens. During the ceremony, Sr Chaves awarded the Medal of Andalucia to several celebrities who were born in the region, including the well-known “crusading” judge Baltasar Garzón and singer Manolo Escobar. The former director general of Unesco, Federico Mayor, was named Hijo Predilecto de Andalucia (Andalucia’s Favourite Son) for this year.
