Two 57-year-old women, one from Barakaldo in the Basque Country and the other from Belgium, were killed last Tuesday night by an AVE high speed train in what police later confirmed as a suicide pact. Police said the women had jumped over the security fence at the Santa Ana station in Antequera and had walked three kilometres in the dark before being hit by the train. The women did not live locally, and police said they seemed to have chosen the Santa Ana station to end their lives. A note found at the scene said: “Please do not keep us alive. We are not organ donors.” The Malaga-to-Madrid AVE line has only been operating since Christmas Eve last year.
