The Guardia Civil have arrested two officials for smuggling drugs into Alhaurin de la Torre jail in less than a week after hearing their names on a phone tap they had placed on a criminal gang. The first man, aged 45, who had been a prison official for 15 years, was sent to a special unit for government employees at Sevilla jail last Tuesday. The second man, aged 50, was not arrested until last Thursday because he had been in hospital. The Guardia arrested him outside the hospital after he was discharged. Both men worked in the jail’s Module 9, which was searched together with Module 13. The prison workers’ union, the CSI-CSIF, issued a statement saying they were isolated cases, and noting that the 500 people employed at the jail carried out their duties impeccably, despite being overworked because of a staff shortage, and should be treated with “the maximum respect”.
