In an effort to encourage more people to adopt stray dogs, the provincial government will offer free obedience training to anyone who takes on these notoriously independent animals. Used to wandering far and wide, many “callejeros” find it difficult to get used to the confined space of a garden or yard. The staff at the Paraiso dog pound still remember one who they say “would have been a good pet for Houdini”. They found several homes from him in the area but he also made his way back to Paraiso. They finally rehomed him with a family in Cordoba, and haven’t seen him since. The courses will begin this month at Paraiso – which is currently home to more than 500 dogs – and will lost 15 to 20 days, depending on how quickly individual dogs learn.
