The 2007 Sustainability Report prepared by Malaga University and the provincial government has warned that hotter summers caused by climate change could have an adverse effect on tourism to the province. Other signs of climate change are decreased rainfall – although water consumption has increased – and higher summer temperatures and colder winters have raised electricity consumption by 32% since the year 2000. There has also been a similar increase in petrol consumption in the same period which has raised CO2 emissions. The amount of rubbish produced in the past seven years has increased by just over 50%.
