Mijas will be the next town along the Costa to install the so-called “ecological islands” that first appeared in Benalmádena in 1997. They consist of underground recycling containers with solid covers that keep streets cleaner and healthier than conventional rubbish containers. They are already a common sight in Marbella, Fuengirola, Manilva, Estepona, and several inland towns. Mijas council announced last week that it planned to invest 1.5 million euros on 20 so-called islands of underground recycling bins around the town but did not give a starting date for the work.
