In response to residents of Alhaurin de la Torre, who claim their health is being affected by dust from nearby stone quarries, the Junta de Andalucia has confirmed that a team of environmental specialists will measure the amount of dust in the air in February. The Socialist group of councillors at the town hall have been backing the residents’ demand for dust measurements. The last one was carried out four years ago and since then the Partido Popular, which has a majority on the council, and the Izquierda Unida (IU, United Left) have been demanding new measurements. One councillor implied that the Junta, which is dominated by the Socialists, has finally decided to act because the regional election is less than two months away.
