PRIME MINISTER SUGGESTS PRESIDENT BUSH MAY INTERVENE IN GIBRALTAR DISCUSSIONS

Spanish prime minister José María Aznar implied last week that U.S. President George Bush may intervene in the discussions with the British government over the future of Gibraltar. Although Sr. Aznar did not state whether Mr. Bush had already become involved in the matter or that he would definitely do so in the future, he did confirm that he had discussed Gibraltar with the American president, saying that he spoke about a lot of matters with political leaders and that after those conversations the other leaders acted as they considered appropriate. The Spanish leader denied, however, that he had sent Mr. Bush a letter on the 20th May asking him to put pressure on British prime minister Tony Blair over the Gibraltar situation.
