MARBELLA TOLD TO PAY TAX DEBTS

Marbella Town Hall received a letter last week from the tax authorities in Madrid demanding payments towards money owed in back tax and Social Security payments, a debt that amounts to 267 million euro. Mayor Ángeles Muñoz had asked for a delay in payments until 2010 and she presented a motion to the council last Friday, asking for a moratorium on the payment. Sra Muñoz, who belongs to the Partido Popular, called on the Socialists to support the motion to show their main interest was in the town and not party politics. Sra Muñoz has accused the Socialist government on several occasions of “economically suffocating” Marbella, instead of giving it the special treatment she says it deserves. The Partido Popular has made a written question to Congress asking which other municipalities owe money to Social Security, and by how much.
